Moana Hotel Swimsuit
Item#: 1241

The Moana Hotel, known as "the first lady of the sea", was built in the 1890s. It was the first hotel on Oahu's Waikiki Beach. The word Moana means "open sea" or "ocean" in Hawaiian. The Prince of Wales, later King Edward VIII fell in love with the hotel's private pier which he would dive off into the waiting pacific. This swimsuit has a full grey body with red horizontal stripes, it has a large label inside reading, Moana Hotel Baths Honolulu T.H. (Territory of Hawaii) Suits Made by Gantner and Mattern Co. San Fransisco California. Olympic swimmer and surfer Duke Kahanamoku was a regular at the hotel. He and the other Waikiki Beach Boys used it as their favorite stomping ground, the private beachfront serving as their office. Duke would hold court and teach tourists how to surf. The Moana's pool was fresh water and a big attraction. This swimsuit would have been loaned to guests who needed it's use. There is a photo of Duke Kahanamoku wearing this swimsuit in the book Waikiki Beach Boys. This is the only Moana swimsuit we have owned. It is a fabulous Hawaiian surf collectible. It is sold and presented with an unused original luggage label from the Moana - Seaside Hotel and Bungalows Waikiki Beach Hawaii. The label measures 5 1/4" x 3 5/8". Swim suit measures: 32" H x 18 1/2" W
